Have you ever been doing something 100% correctly, but just knew something was wrong?
That was me in 2014.
I was like a Paleo Queen. Doing absolutely everything right…
Clean paleo diet…✔️
Zero processed foods…✔️
No fun stuff (paleo cookies, pancakes, you name it)…✔️
Just real food. Real meats, and fruits, and eggs, and sweet potatoes, if it was a “healthy food”, I was having it. So everything must have been running smoothly, right?
I was constipated 24/7, and my belly was so bloated I was starting to look 6 months pregnant!
And mentally, felt like I would snap into another binge at any given moment (a result from my Bulimic past).
A never-ending rollercoaster.
That was me in 2014. I still believed I should be on a clean diet 100% all the time.
But why was I still living with the bloating? How the heck could I be bloated when I was eating all natural foods?
I mean, eating pizza, and ice cream, and then being bloated, that made sense to me. But this?
And after a little digging (cough…months later), I found my answer:
I was suffering from Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
That was it! That’s what I was battling! And all the symptoms were matching mine. The website below was (and still is) a very helpful resource.
I searched the internet again, this time to find a local Naturopathic Doctor, and I found one in Calgary. We started treating the SIBO with antibiotics, but she was also suspecting an underlying cause, Lyme disease.
I was not digesting carbs very well, and to make things worse I was pre diabetic at the time.
This was another reason why the carbs weren’t loving me. It resulted in weight gain.
In 2015 I found out about the Keto with cycles of carbs lifestyle.
While having SIBO, it’s tricky to eat carbs because that’s what the bacteria feeds on. So I had to be moderate in the amount and type of carbs I was eating.
Keto & Carbs. I loved it, and I lost weight. And now I am maintaining.
But that wasn’t enough to battle the SIBO.
So, I started implementing a Low Fodmap diet, that is helping with managing the bloating.
Low Fodmap means cutting out gluten and lactose from your diet.
It doesn’t mean cutting out whole food groups however. Thank goodness, because I was done cutting out food groups. No more of that for me!
I will never become Bulimic again!
The website below is a great resource to learn more about the Low Fodmap diet.
The Low Fodmap works for my bloating.
Keto and Carbs helps my weight management.
I am still maintaining both of these diets today.
In restaurants, and on vacations, I am not too worried about eating foods with gluten and lactose anymore. Do I get bloated, yes. But I accept it.
In my day to day routine, I eat Low Fodmap. On my Rebel Carb Parties I stick mostly to gluten free food as well, but sometimes I’m feeling like a REBEL and eat whatever.
I can eat gluten free Oreo cookies, animal crackers, donuts, lactose free ice cream, and even more. And of course on vacations I will end up eating gluten and lactose.
But I do end up paying the price in the end. Which is some bloating and a little pain.
